Tianyu Wang: A Nominee for Photography’s Forefront Explores Identity, Spirituality, and Societal Structures

As the esteemed British Journal of Photography (BJP) finalizes its highly anticipated "Ones to Watch" issue, highlighting the vanguard of international photographic talent, a spotlight now turns to Tianyu Wang. Nominated by renowned creative director Erik Kessels, Wang’s work is a compelling exploration of personal history, cultural heritage, and the nuanced experiences of women within patriarchal societies. This feature revisits Wang’s artistry, offering a deeper dive into the themes and influences that shape her distinctive photographic vision, as the publication prepares to unveil its 2025 selections in Issue 7926 this June.

A Journey Rooted in Nature and Taoist Spirituality

Currently immersed in the profound quietude of the Silence Awareness Existence residency at Arteles Creative Center in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, Tianyu Wang’s practice is intrinsically linked to the natural world and her formative experiences. Her connection to nature is not merely aesthetic; it is deeply interwoven with her childhood in China’s Shandong region, where she was raised within a Taoist tradition that shares significant philosophical and spiritual underpinnings with shamanism. This upbringing fostered a profound respect for the interconnectedness of all things, a sentiment that resonates strongly with her current artistic pursuits.

Wang’s exploration of nature during her Finnish residency is particularly poignant, as she dedicates only one hour per week to online connectivity, choosing instead to engage directly with her surroundings. She plans to develop new work inspired by the Finnish landscape and the ancient practices of Sámi shamanism. This focus on indigenous spiritual traditions mirrors her deep-seated connection to her own cultural roots.

A pivotal figure in her artistic narrative is Yan Wenjiang, a historical figure from her hometown who transcended her earthly existence to become a revered deity. Wang’s re-examination of Yan Wenjiang’s legend revealed a narrative of a woman who, through her ascendance, escaped the confines of a patriarchal society. This discovery has become a foundational element in Wang’s artistic inquiry, subtly influencing her diverse body of work, which, despite its stylistic breadth, consistently touches upon themes of liberation and resilience.

Echoes of Tradition: From Documentary to the Abstract

Wang’s early photographic series, "Settled into the mountain for eternity," exemplifies her ability to weave documentary and portraiture into a cohesive exploration of spirituality within the everyday. In Shandong, she observes, the spiritual and the mundane are not disparate; Taoism emphasizes a holistic worldview, and Yan Wenjiang, as a local goddess, embodies an accessible, grounded divinity. "She’s a normal woman from the start, she’s like everyone’s grandmother," Wang explains, highlighting the intimate and familial relationship her community maintains with the deity. This profound connection is further illustrated by the traditional practice of dedicating a room in homes to her, as if she were an integral part of the family unit.

Moving beyond direct documentation, Wang’s second significant series, "Yan Wenjiang," delves into a more experimental approach, informed by the spiritual experiences she has gleaned from her grandmother’s wisdom. Images of hands, a recurring motif, symbolize the transmission of energy and healing, suggesting a continuous flow that Wang hopes to embody in her forthcoming book project. The "Yan Wenjiang" series offers an alternative, non-Western perspective on the world, both visually and metaphorically. Wang credits traditional Chinese painting as a significant influence, particularly its departure from Western linear perspective. These paintings often employ fluid, shifting viewpoints, arranging elements without a fixed vanishing point, a technique that Wang translates into her photographic compositions, creating a sense of dynamism and multi-dimensionality.

The Camera as an Extension of Self and a Shaper of Perception

Born in 1997, Wang is a digital native, a generation for whom technology and visual media are seamlessly integrated into their lives. "Since I was a kid, I used the internet and had a camera. It’s part of my life," she states. This intrinsic relationship with the camera extends beyond mere utility; she describes it as an extension of the self. "When I talk with my friends, we say the camera is like part of our body. I use it to document the world I see, and in a way, it has also shaped how I perceive the world."

This sentiment aligns with the theoretical work of Vilém Flusser, who posited that cameras are not simply passive instruments for recording reality but active agents that construct a new visual culture. Flusser argued that the camera, as a programmed visual tool, not only influences the photographer’s creative process but also fundamentally alters how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them. Wang’s practice embodies this understanding, using the camera not just to capture but to interrogate and reimagine visual experiences.

Navigating Societal Structures: The "Hiding and Seeking" Series

Wang’s most recent and critically acclaimed project, "Hiding and Seeking," confronts the pervasive influence of patriarchal structures on women’s lives, particularly within the private sphere of the family. This series, created in her home environment—a space ostensibly of safety—features Wang contorting her body into seemingly impossible poses. Shot in stark black and white, the images are further manipulated to create disorienting, fragmented planes, challenging the viewer’s perception and mirroring the subtle yet pervasive nature of invisible violence within families.

The genesis of this series occurred in Lausanne, Switzerland, while Wang was pursuing her MA in photography at ECAL. She notes that the physical distance from China provided the necessary perspective to critically examine these deeply ingrained societal norms. "Family space is private space, and it’s also the realm where patriarchal discipline, especially for women, is perpetuated and operates across generations," she explains. Wang elaborates on the insidious nature of this violence, stating, "People know that in a patriarchy it’s easier to hide violence in this realm because, beyond direct physical violence, the manifestations of invisible violence within families are subtle and fragmented. When one is inside this system, it’s often difficult to perceive and break away from it—it takes time for people to fully realise its existence. I hope to prompt reflection on the oppression created by everyday, invisible violence under the long-term influence of patriarchy."

The "Hiding and Seeking" series, with its "quirky and anarchic" aesthetic, has been instrumental in bringing Wang’s work to wider recognition. Its selection for the Circulation(s) festival in Paris last spring caught the attention of Erik Kessels, who lauded it as "at the same time disrupting and heartbreaking." Kessels further commented, "The aesthetic of the black-and-white images confuses the viewer and communicates the painful content of the subject very well. A bold and brave act from this highly talented artist, coming from a culture where it is not easy to talk about this topic."

A Future in Europe: Navigating Artistic and Political Landscapes

Currently based between Lausanne and Paris, Wang is actively seeking paid commissions. Her diverse skill set, honed by a five-year tenure at Jiazazhi Press, where she worked as a book editor and designer during her BA and beyond, makes her a versatile candidate for roles in both photography and publishing. This professional experience is particularly significant given the escalating pressures faced by independent publishers in China since 2022, a climate that has seen detentions of publishers and the closure of independent bookstores. While Wang does not directly address these political developments, her decision to remain in Europe suggests a strategic move to pursue her artistic career in an environment that offers greater creative freedom and stability.

The selection of Tianyu Wang for BJP’s "Ones to Watch" issue underscores her burgeoning significance in the contemporary photography landscape. Her ability to synthesize personal history, cultural traditions, and critical social commentary into visually arresting and conceptually rich work positions her as a vital voice for this generation of artists. As her oeuvre continues to evolve, Wang’s explorations promise to offer profound insights into the complexities of identity, spirituality, and the enduring struggle for liberation in an increasingly interconnected world.
